Crop sensor, compact mirrorless. Itâs a Sony, what more can you ask.
Love it. I bought another one when my first one got damaged recently, even though itâs a few years old as of 2024, lightweight and pretty small but packs a punch. Easy to learn the functions and buttons. Itâs not full frame, of course, but doesnât have that FF price tag either. Highly recommend for a first time camera. Good for experienced too.

Great camera with great features for a good price.
I like that this line of mirrorless cameras is lightweight and is relatively compact compared to a digital DLR. As with many of the newer digital cameras the 6400 shoots beautiful video and I am especially happy with it having a stereo mini input that would allow use of high end microphones. The camera is light years ahead of the bulky cameras I used to use on commercial field shoots. Aspiring videographers don’t know how lucky they are to have tools like this at their disposal at such a low cost. Not only is the video stellar, the stills are too. I love the continuous shooting mode when shooting wildlife. Sony has a great lineup of lenses to pair with the camera and other lens manufacturers are developing lenses for the Sony E Mount cameras as well.

Back to business!
Just awesome! This camera is just what I was hopping it will be. It is the replacement for my old A77 with no functioning lcd and my outdated but still functionals a580 and a850 fullframe. I also got the e mount adapter to work with my A mount lens collection from my Minolta times. All works great ðð¼ . Even my old flash mount adapter workrd! I tested my HVL-F56AM and HVL-58AM flash units and both works great with the new a6400. The camera came in very good condition and well protected. It also came with the firmware updated version 2.0 A great product and great price. If you have an old lens collection and Minolta adapters this will be your best and affordable choice to go with. You will not be disappointed… Now, to have fun with it.

Great travel camera
I was looking for a travel camera for those times when I donât want to lug around my full frame camera and the related gear. I donât really do much video but it is nice having 4K video when I want it. For photography, this little APS-c camera can take some great photos. Pros: 1. Light weight and small, easy to travel and walk around with. 2 has a viewfinder ( I found many this size did not). 3. Has TTL and HSS (I often shoot with strobes and speedlites) 4. Auto eye tracking is pretty good. 5. Menu and button layout isnât as bad as some have claimed (my other cameras are Canon and it is different) 6. Has some amount of weather protection (most cameras this size did not).Cons: 1. Battery life isnât great (luckily batteries are small and lightweight). 2. Priceâ¦the A6400 is at least 3 models removed from the newest A series, but still in the $900âs. There are numerous other brands in the same category that are in the $550-$750 range. 3. The flip up (not out) screen is weird and takes a while to ge used to. I donât use it much as I use the viewfinder mostly, but can see where some folks would have. A problem with it as when it is up it is directly behind the hot shoe. 4. Not great at high ISOs. From what I have seen so far, ISO 1200 is acceptable but above that it gets pretty grainy.Overall. Great little camera for the size. It was the best choice for me as it had the majority of the capabilities I was looking for in a Small travel interchangeable lens travel camera.

Best value for the money
I bought this camera as a second body to my A7iii(upgrading to the A7iv) for b-rolls and as a carry-around camera for travel and hiking.Iâm very satisfied with the quality of pictures that come out of it. As someone whose first camera was a full-frame, it took me awhile to get adjusted to the crop sensor images. But if you understand how to use 1.5 crop factor, itâs easy to achieve an equivalent full frame look with a lens that is 1.5 times wider.Having said this, sometimes, at a glance, I canât tell which pictures I snapped with the A7iii or the A6400.This is a great entry level camera if you want to pursue photography as a hobby or if you have a more expensive camera that you donât want to carry around to minimize your risks and liabilities for lower budget projects.

I umm’d and ahh’d about which camera to buy for several months. Finally i landed on this one. The sony is not perfect, but nothing is unless you want to spend big bucks. This camera produces fantastic images, is portable, doesn’t scream “EXPENSIVE CAMERA” and is excellent for photo and video. The main missing thing for me was IBIS and i wish it was full frame, but full frame means mega expensive lenses. Now that the A6700 has been released, if i was buying a camera today i would likely go for that model, but the A6400 still holds its own for the price.

This is one of few APS-C that does eye AF for humans and animals, which is exactly what I need and why I bought it.I wanted a camera that’s small and lightweight for taking pictures of my dog on the walk/hike. Yeah, this is my ‘dog cam’. Without IBIS can be an issue for some but most of my lenses either have the build-it image stabilizer or prime lenses with f1.4/1.8 wide open aperture, so getting reasonable shutter speed is relatively easy. The high ISO performance of this camera is only mediocre.Surprisingly, I think Sony’s menu system is great. I use the customized menu most of the time but I also never had issues finding a setting from the menu system, at least it’s not better/worse than Nikon and Canon, and it is a lot less confusing compared to Fuji’s menu, which is the worst IMO.Here are some tips for getting the most out of the A6400:1. Turn off the Picture Profile when shooting still.2. Only shoot with manual exposure, manual WB. AUTO WB is all over the place when shooting outdoors.3. Can’t trust EVF or the screen, learn to read the histogram.4. Shooting with MF lenses should pair with external monitor.5. Get good lenses and fast lenses to avoid boosting ISO beyond 1600.* Spare batteriesFor video:1. Only shoot with manual exposure, manual focus and manual WB.2. Use HLG if you are not good with colour grading, or SLOG-2 if you are. Adobe PP has the colour banding issue with SLOG-2 when pushing too far, Davinci Resolve 17 does it better.3. Make sure to turn on Project Color Management in Davinci Resolve and use Wide Colour Gamma.4. Get a good gimbal and forget about IBIS.5. Rig it out to shoot handheld and forget about IBIS.6. Use an external monitor.7. Spare batteries/dummy battery with an external battery pack.Get out and take some pictures and stop worrying about the features you don’t have.Enjoy your A6400!
